Furnaces TorontoAt the time this article was written, it was the beginning of May. It’s well into spring and while the days are (gradually) growing warmer, there have been a number of cold snaps and overnight freeze warnings.

When is the heating season actually over?

According to meteorologists, the major threat of significant cold weather dramatically diminishes throughout the month of May in Canada. Still, there are going to be occasional nights and even some days when the temperature drops toward the freezing mark.

Most homes have an automatic thermostat, which will generally call on the heating system to turn on when the indoor temperature drops to a designated level. If you turn the thermostat down to the minimum, you may wake up to some cold temperatures in your home.

Depending on your preferences, you may consider the heating season to be over, for the most part, by the end of May. Your furnace or other heating system may not turn on more than a couple more times before that, though.

Why It’s Important to Know that the Heating Season May Not be Over

With the threat of cold weather still lingering over the region, especially overnight, it is important to keep your heating system in good working condition.

This past winter was hard on all of us. It was especially tough on the heating systems in homes throughout the Greater Toronto Area. The harder your system had to work this past winter, the more important it becomes to have it serviced as soon as possible.

You should be certain to replace the air filter in the furnace every month. If it hasn’t been replaced this entire winter, it’s well past due.

The heating components may have become corroded or covered in sludge from oil if you rely on heating oil. These should be cleaned, inspected, and replaced if necessary.

Any time that your heating system turns on if it hasn’t been serviced or cleaned in a long time (the entire winter), it’s placing increased pressure on the entire system.

Have your heating system inspected and serviced now, while the heating days are diminishing so that you’ll know that it’s operating to peak performance levels and that it will be ready for operation next winter as well.
