hot-coldThis summer has been quite an interesting one. Usually, in Toronto we get several weeks during late June, July, and early August where the temperatures can become scorching. Heat ways are common during this period, but this year was not like any year in recent memory.

We had record cold temperatures during July overnights and the average daytime temperatures in July and August have been well below normal, for the most part.

Those record cold temperatures meant that some people might have been turning on their heating system at night during July and August. That is simply incredible. It is also taxing to your home’s heating and cooling systems.

If you experienced the type of weather where you had to run the air conditioning during the day, but then also switched over to have your heat running at night to keep you from freezing, then this is creating an interesting situation for your system.

For the most part, when people have a single system of duct work feeding their heating and cooling system, it is supposed to be a seamless transition from one to the other. However, when you are trying to cool your home during the day and then heated at night, you are increasing the stress on both systems.

If you hadn’t had your heating system checked after the last winter season, there could be some minor issues that still need to be addressed. Running the heating system can exacerbate those problems, potentially creating even more expensive repairs later on.

A lot of homeowners throughout Toronto tend to delay having their heating system cleaned or maintained until the fall because they don’t see that they’re going to need it during the summer. Well, surprise, because this summer was not like any other we have had.

If you had to run your heating system at any time this summer, it’s a good idea to call your local HVAC company to have a technician come out to your home and service both your heating and air-conditioning systems.
