When you are running forced hot air in your Toronto area home, you may notice that the heat registers don’t feel as hot as you would expect them to. There could be any number of reasons for this, but the most common one happens to do with human body temperature.

When you are heating your home, the air temperature in the house might be around 18°C and you want to heat it up to 23 or 24°. As the furnace is running and forcing warm air through the ducts in your house, the ambient air temperature inside the house will rise slowly.

However, when you walk in front of one of those heat registers you may notice that the air coming out of them doesn’t feel all that hot. In fact, it may only feel lukewarm to you. That is basically because your body temperature, which sits at 37°C is much warmer than the air temperature in your house. It is also likely about the same temperature as the heat coming out from your furnace.

So while you may not think that the furnace is pumping out much hot air, consider the fact that right by the furnace, near the blower, the air temperature will be much higher than it will be after it is moved through the ducts in the house and to the heat registers in each room. As long as the temperature coming out of those registers is at least approximate to normal body temperature, it will continue to heat your home to the desired temperature.

If you have any concerns about whether your heating system is working properly, contact an HVAC specialist as soon as possible. It is best to do this now, during the fall season before winter arrives with its full fury.
