boilers_btnIt’s never fun to find out you need a new boiler, especially during the heart of winter, but every homeowner will once in a long while. When it happens, you want to make sure you get the right one, but how can you be sure?

The first step is to understand the different types of boilers that are available and how they work. No two are exactly the same, and you have to learn what’s available, what you currently have in your home, and which will work best for your needs. Here are some tips to help you understand the different types of boilers that are available.

The image that pops into your mind when you hear the word boiler is most likely that of a conventional model. These have been around for years. They consist of a large pressurized tank that heats water to high temperatures. Conventional boilers can use wood, gas, oil, or coal to heat the water. They also tend to be quite inefficient, and they take up a lot of room because the tank is large and bulky.

Combination boilers are very similar to conventional models – they have two main differences. They heat the water as well as store it and take up less space because they don’t require a separate water heater. They are also more efficient than conventional models, but not by much.

Electric boilers are seen as beneficial by some because they use electricity to heat the water and as a result, don’t carry the risk of carbon monoxide issues conventional and combination models do. They are, however, very inefficient when it comes to heating a home. McKinnon does not recommend this type for homeowners.

The most efficient type of boiler is a condensing model. They work very similarly to conventional boilers in that a heat source heats the water. The difference is that they are able to regain lost heat through the water vapor that is created as the water is heated. This means that for each fuel unit that it uses, more heat can be created than with a conventional boiler.
